Keep hydrated at work this summer!

Yesterday marked the highest temperatures this year reaching a scorching 30 degrees. With the hot weather continuing at least for the next coming week the Work Ready team are strongly advising everybody stay on top of their fluid intake

Increased sweat losses from commuting in and out of work and air conditioning on transport can have a serious impact on your hydration levels.

Dehydration can lead to serious physical and psychological impacts. Not only to yourself, but when working machinery for example, dehydration can have safety implications for employees driving vehicles for work or operating machinery. Further impacts could include:

  • Reduced alertness
  • Mental fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue
  • Nausea
  • Dizziness

A useful way of self-assessing whether you are adequately hydrated is the colour of your urine. Aim for a pale straw colour and if it’s darker then top up on healthy fluids. We can help work places with tools such as specially designed Work Ready pee charts for your toilet doors and hydration awareness mugs.

Work Ready dietitians recommend a daily intake of 6x mugs / 1.6 litres of fluid for women and 8x mugs / 2 litres for men on a typical day. During the hot weather please do consider increasing your intake of healthy fluids from a typical day to compensate for the water  lost through sweat.
